Standford explained that the domestic situation began when a dad became agitated over his 12-year-old son playing a video game on Oct. 4.
The boy and his uncle turned off the game and went to the second floor of their home in the 7500 block of Whitaker Avenue. But the dad followed his son and shot the uncle.
That's when the boy called 911 — while his dad, with a gun still in his hand, went to the front of the house and waited for the police to arrive, according to Standford's statement.
When two Philadelphia Police Officers and their supervisor arrived at the Fox Chase area home at 7:30 p.m., they were immediately fired upon.
The two officers were shot in their legs and the supervisor was struck in the finger, according to Stanford. They returned fire with at least one newly arrived backup officer joining them, for a total of three office guns being discharged. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released.
All three Philadelphia Police members who were shot were taken to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital and are in stable condition, Stanford explained. The uncle was taken to Abington Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
The investigation is ongoing, but officials have already released statements about this tragic turn of events.
"Thankful that these officers will be okay, and I wish them a full and speedy recovery," Mayor Jim Kenney said.
"My prayers are with the @PhillyPolice officers shot in the line of duty tonight and the victims that they were trying to protect," Senator Bob Casey wrote.
"Yet another episode of senseless gun violence in this great city," Fetterman said, going on to wish the officers a speedy recovery.
